I’m Madison, a self-taught software developer. Just a few years ago, I was asking myself these same questions.
I taught myself how to code using online courses like Udacity and freeCodeCamp. Learning how to code on my own with no bootcamp and no mentors was the hardest thing I’ve done. After teaching myself how to code, I started applying to software developer jobs. However, because I had no college degree and no previous experience, I didn’t hear back from many companies when I applied.
That’s when I decided to take an unconventional approach to the job hunt. I found a startup I was excited about and I started part-time volunteering my time as a developer intern on their team. After a few months, I was promoted to a paid software developer position in mid-2017. Fast forward to 2019. Now I work as a software developer at an awesome company called Mediavine. On the weekends and nights when I’m not working, I love to help others from nontraditional backgrounds become engineers.
